He is a part time Consultant Psychiatrist in The Hospital Authority. He served as the Associate Consultant Psychiatrist at the United Christian Hospital and as the Clinical Coordinator at Yung Fung Shee Psychiatric Centre from 2007 to 2018. He played a pivotal role in the development of Community Psychiatric Service, Personalized Care Program (Case Management) for patients with severe mental illness and Psychotherapy Services in the Kowloon East Cluster of the Hospital Authority.

He was experienced in different subspecialties, including general adult psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, old-age psychiatry, consultation-liaison psychiatry, psychotherapy, substance abuse psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, rehabilitation and community psychiatry.

Within the Hospital Authority, he also contributed to the development of different corporate services through serving at different platforms, including Working Groups on Community Psychiatric Service, Learning Disability Service and the Mental Health Promotion Committee. Professionally, he is a member of the Division of Community and Social Psychiatry, Division of the General Adult and Division of Psychotherapy of the Hong Kong College of Psychiatrists.

Dr Tam is experienced in supervising psychiatric services and training of psychiatric specialists. He was the Clinical Supervisor of psychiatric trainees since 2007, as well as the Psychotherapy Supervisor in the Department of Psychiatry of UCH since 2010. He was the Honorary Clinical Supervisor for Psychiatry in training program of Family Physicians. He has been appointed as the Clinical Assistant Professor (Honorary) of the Department of Psychiatry of The Chinese University of Hong Kong from 2008 to 2018 and Clinical Assistant Professor (Honorary) of the Department of Psychiatry of The University of Hong Kong since 2016
